# API quickstart

## Create an API key

In Tamloot, open **Settings → API**. Create a key and copy it immediately: the full secret is shown only once. API access is available to enabled accounts; if you cannot see the API section, [contact support](https://tamloot.cc/en/support).

Store the key in your server environment. Keep it out of browser code, public repositories, and logs.

```bash
export TAMLOOT_API_KEY="tml_live_replace_with_your_key"
```

## Send a request

Search for a person by name, email, or phone. The search term must contain 2–100 characters.

```bash
curl --get "https://api.tamloot.cc/v1/contacts" \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer $TAMLOOT_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "query=maya"
```

The JSON response contains matching contacts in `data`. An empty list means no contacts matched; it is not an authentication error.

## Use the result

Take a contact's `id` and pass it as `contact_id` to [browse sessions](/en/docs/developers/api-reference/search-sessions). Follow `pagination.next_offset` while `pagination.has_more` is true.

The API only reads data visible to the key's owner. It cannot create, update, or delete records. [Explore all endpoints](/en/docs/developers/api-reference).

## Handle errors

- `401`: check the bearer header and whether the key was revoked or rotated.
- `404`: the record does not exist or is not visible to this account.
- `422`: correct the parameters using the endpoint reference.
- `429`: wait the number of seconds in `Retry-After`, then retry.

Rotate or revoke keys in **Settings → API**. See the [API overview](/en/docs/developers/api) for rate limits and versioning, or [connect with MCP](/en/docs/developers/mcp-server) to use an AI client instead.
